Fruit salad with fresh mint and coconut vanilla syrup

Warmer weather is upon us, the days are getting longer, the garden is bursting with new buds and fragrant flowers and the chickens have annihilated the strawberry patch. I can ‘t really blame them, the burgeoning wheelbarrow was far too tempting for any fowl to resist. We made the mistake of allowing the girls out […]

Chocolate-date layer cake with peanut butter chocolate ganache

‘Until they discover that the universe was formed by a giant cake exploding, baking science will forever remain kitchen-based. Without realising it, we’re invoking complex science to create even the simplest birthday cake. We often feel a twinge of panic when we read the packaging of shop-bought cakes and see ingredients like emulsifiers, humectants, modified […]

A banana cake for a dear friend

“It seems to me that our three basic needs, for food and security and love, are so mixed and mingled and entwined that we cannot straightly think of one without the others. So it happens that when I write of hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth and […]

It conjures up images of my childhood, lying in bed listening to the muffled voices rising up the stairwell from the dining […]

Zucchini Fritters for the 2 year old

Producer of Seasonal foods | Restorer of vintage treasures | Merchant of beautiful objects

The Still Room is a gathering place of recipes, anecdotes, treasures, tips, tools and beautiful objects that I have collected over many years. It is an expression of who I am and what brings me pleasure in life. I see the kitchen as an integral part of transforming a house into a home – and The Still Room is an extension of this.

While the vast majority of people do not have the luxury of being able to accommodate a still room in their house, I believe everyone can take something from what it has represented throughout the centuries – a haven that encouraged the individual to create products for the improvement and enjoyment of day to day life.
